BASED ON THE BEST-SELLING NOVEL BY STEPHEN FRY
THE LIAR is the story of a schoolboy whose first crush - and unparalleled ability to lie, cheat and dissemble - sucks him into a wild and wonderful world of espionage.
Tony Hagger will be directing from his script based on Stephen Fry's hilarious best-selling novel and will be supported by internationally award-winning Heads of Department, high-calibre Producers and Execs.
We have a very exciting A list ensemble cast lined up that will give this production a 'Best of British' feel to it, plus a 'who's who' of British comedy cameos.
The Liar is known as internationally renowned British institution Stephen Fry’s first (and many argue his best) novel, pulling from his own early life experiences, which became a global best-seller. It is Stephen’s semi-autobiographical tale of his adolescence, and first love, and so is the closest of all Stephen’s novels tied to the Brand “Fry”.
It is a laugh out loud, tar black British caper comedy that plays with the spy genre (riffing on old James Bonds/ Kingsman, Cambridge spies and Another Country) with a wicked sense of humour that is anti-establishment in feel, and an openly gay Fry-like central character.
The Liar is a fast-paced, rude, dark and very funny comedy about learning to accept who you are in life.
A brilliant, manipulative young man, who has a strong compulsion to lie, becomes embroiled in an elaborate 'game' of lying and finds himself in a world where nobody can be trusted.
Adrian is a rebel coming to terms with his sexuality at an elite British public school where conformity is the norm and where future leaders of the English ruling class are being prepared for their roles in the establishment. Adrian wants a successful career within it, but the school and the system has traditional ways of dealing with rebels.
This is the educational career of public school student Adrian Healey (Stephen Fry's alter-ego, and an inveterate liar), whose school pranks somehow get him embroiled in an international espionage case.
It has the quirk, adventure and Britishness of Paddington 1&2, the rebellious spirit of St Trinians, the pain and vulnerability of Moonlight, but with the broader appeal of Grand Budapest Hotel or Dirty, Rotten Scoundrels!

"The Liar is a director's dream - it's a wonderfully imaginative story with characters we've not seen before. I see it as a potential classic: a fun, intelligent and outrageously nutty comedy that tells the truth about lies and asks big questions about artifice and authenticity in society and human behaviour, as well as being a heart-breakingly true account of being young and in love. You may need to put a bit more thought into it than your average movie, but that pays off and it will keep you guessing throughout".
